Introduction:

The Pediatric Department organized a two-day educational and interactive program to  enhance the knowledge and skills of nursing students in pediatric care. The event was  coordinated by the HOD of Pediatrics, Mrs. Hemalatha ma’am and supported by faculty  members. Participants included all the batches with special sessions dedicated to  freshers.

General Objectives:

The students of Basic Bsc and Diploma nursing are able to identify the health problems  developmental needs of children and able to apply scientific based nursing principles  care and nursing process in the specific to the area of pediatric nursing.

Specific Objectives:

To encompass both growth( increase in quantity or size ) and improving the quality of life  ( development) by addressing issues like health education, living standards etc. 

Identifying newborns at risk for morbidity and mortality assessing maternal health and  predicting future health outcomes as well as guiding interventions to improve neonatal  and infant health .  

To promote accurate information to reduce misinformation and encourage evidence  based decision ultimately supporting mother in making informed choice about infant  feeding. 

Day 1: 25th February 2025

Program Highlights:

 1.Welcome Speech 

 – Delivered by a student representative, setting the tone for the event. 

  1. Chart Presentation Competition 

 – Students showcased creative and informative charts on pediatric care topics.   – Judged by faculty for content accuracy, design, and presentation skills.  

  1. Quiz Competition 

 – A competitive quiz focused on pediatric nursing concepts, diseases, and care  protocols.  

 – Teams demonstrated critical thinking and teamwork.  

  1. Feedback Session  

 – Participants shared constructive feedback on the morning program. 

Day 2: 6th March 2025

 – A melodious invocation to commence the day. 

Welcome Speech 

 – Addressed by a student, welcoming dignitaries and participants. 

3. Lamp Lighting Ceremony

 – Symbolizing the enlightenment of knowledge, led by the principal and faculty.  

Introduction Speech by Mrs. Hemalatha Ma’am 

 – Highlighted the program’s objectives and the importance of pediatric nursing. 

Act on Growth and Development  

 – A skit illustrating stages of child development and associated challenges.  

The act emphasizes on different stages of growth and development in life till adulthood like

 Neonatal : 0 to 4 weeks 

 Infancy : 4 weeks to 12 months  

 Toddler : 1 to 3 years 

 Preschooler : 3 to 6 years 

 School age : 6 to 12 years 

 Adolescent : 13 to 18 years  

Live Demonstration on Newborn Baby Reflexes  

– students demonstrated neonatal reflexes (e.g., Moro, rooting) using simulation  models.  

The reflexes shown are :  
Sucking reflex
Gag reflex 
Sneezing or coughing reflex 
Glabellar reflex 
Blinking reflex 
Grasp reflex

 – A silent performance debunking cultural misconceptions about infant care The Mime emphasizes on.

AVOID BREASTFEEDING IF MOTHER HAVE COLD OR FEVER.  7.SHOULD AVOID TAKING BABY OUTSIDE FOR THE FIRST FEW MONTHS.

 – Winners of the chart presentation and quiz competitions were awarded certificates

 – Delivered by a student, expressing gratitude to faculty, participants, and organizers.  

Feedback & Outcomes

– Participant Feedback: Described as “amazing,” with appreciation for the hands-on  sessions and creative activities.  

– Freshers’ Engagement : Afternoon library sessions (IV cannulation, neonatal  resuscitation) were particularly impactful for new students.  

– Success Metrics : Smooth coordination, high participation, and effective knowledge  dissemination.

Afternoon Session (Library):

– IV Cannulization for Preterm Birth Babies: 

A hands-on demonstration for freshers to learn neonatal IV techniques.  

– PPT Presentation on Neonatal Resuscitation: An interactive session covering  protocols for neonatal emergencies.

Acknowledgments

– Mrs. Hemalatha ma’am (Program Coordinator) for meticulous planning.  – Faculty members for mentoring students and judging competitions.  Emcees Rinju Thomas and Godwin C.J for anchoring the event seamlessly.  Conclusion 

The program successfully bridged theoretical knowledge with practical skills in  pediatric care. It fostered teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking among students  while addressing contemporary challenges in neonatal and child health. The  department looks forward to organizing similar events in the future.
